Welcome to Chaotic Planet
This whole site is kind of a test bed while I learn how to build websites, style them using CSS and play with some javaScript. I've built it from scratch in Notepad++ which is a great bit of open source software, I've also used Text Wrangler and Aptana Studio on the Mac. There will no doubt be issues with the site as I try new things and subsequently break links and page layout but bear with me, it's a trial and error process.
As I am a massive gadget and technology fan I've decided to aim the site towards these things. I've started with the software links pages for both Windows and Mac as this seems a sensible place to start. Most of, if not all the links I have provided will be free software so don't worry, I'm not on commission for anyone. However most of the software I've listed is probably worth donating to as without this support the developers often have a hard time adding new funtionality to their products. So I suggest trundling along to the Mac and Windows page to see what I've already listed on there. There is now a contact sheet in the About section so if you have any ideas for other software links you can send them through to me and I'll get them on there.
You might have noticed the social links buttons on the bottom of most of the sites pages, I've picked Twitter and Google+ as these are the sites I feel work best for sharing interesting content around the net in a quick and efficient manner. Now there are hundreds of other social sites with this functionality, in fact i use Tumblr myself, so I'll be looking to add some more of these in soon too.
I've recently revamped the Search bar at the bottom of the pages to use the Google Custom Search Engine system as this allows for simple and efficient customisation of the bar and the results page. In fact the results page will show in a seperate page of Chaotic Planet so it fits in with the style and design of the rest of the site. The benefit of using Google is that you get the power of their awesome sauce algorithm that basicall lays waste to most other search engines. In the case of the search bar on here it will search this site and the Chaotic Planet Tumblr archive.
The rest of the site is currently in development. Here are some of the ideas for what is coming soon or in development already.
- More gallery content once I get my head around the javaScript better
- Possibly some more interactive aspects to the site, I've tried drop downs for navigation but decided they were overkill but there are some other ideas that might work in other areas of the site so watch this space....
